South African Airways - The Fleet, Illustrated
The brief
Sawubona, South African Airways’ in-flight magazine, needed the airline’s entire fleet illustrated for its “Our Fleet” page: every aircraft type the airline flew, from the Boeing 737 Freighter to the Airbus A340-600, presented to one visual standard alongside its specifications - passengers, length, wingspan, fuel capacity and cruising speed.
The page had to read at seat-back distance: a clean line-up a passenger could scan mid-flight and find the aircraft they were sitting in.
The approach
Each of the eight aircraft was built and rendered in 3D to a consistent angle, scale and lighting, with the SAA livery applied accurately against photographic reference - tail flag, cheatline and titles correct for every type.
The fleet reads as a family: one line-up, one standard, specifications typeset alongside each aircraft. Modelled, rendered and finished by one illustrator, start to finish.
Outcome
The page ran in print in Sawubona’s May 2013 issue. The work was created in-house at the magazine’s publisher, before the studio traded as SBT20 - shown here as part of the capability record: 3D illustration, editorial systems and brand-accurate craft.
